The Shine Care Story

Shine Care began in a tiny room on Mosley Street in Newcastle, where Jonathan and Claire set out with a bold vision: to deliver care shaped entirely around the person - giving people the respect, independence, and opportunities they deserve.

From the start, their mission was simple but powerful:

Listen carefully, offer real choices, and shape support around what matters most to each person. Even the choice to use the word clients was deliberate - a daily reminder that the people Shine Care supports are not just recipients of care, but the very reason the organisation exists.

Not long after Shine Care began, the BBC exposed the abuse at Winterbourne View Hospital. The scandal shocked the nation, but for Jonathan and Claire, it also confirmed the urgency of what they were trying to do. If services built on compassion and respect were ever needed, it was then.

The Beginning

The early years were far from easy. Progress was slow, and for a long time, Shine Care had no clients at all. It would have been easy to give up, but Jonathan and Claire held fast to their vision. Nearly two years passed before Shine Care welcomed its very first client - who, more than a decade later, is still with us and thriving in their own home.

From those first small steps, Shine Care began to grow steadily, one client at a time, building a reputation for compassion, professionalism, and innovation.

Along the way, there were challenges - none more testing than the arrival of COVID-19 in 2020. With long hours, sleepless nights, and the pressure of safeguarding vulnerable clients, the team pulled together and carried Shine Care through. It was an incredibly difficult period, but it also showed who we are at our core: resilient, adaptable, and determined to find solutions no matter the circumstances.

During this time, Shine Care also became one of the first to embrace true multi-partnership working - creating new ways of collaborating that placed clients firmly at the centre and ensured they received the very best support.

The Journey

Today, Shine Care is proud to employ over 70 people and support 16 clients across the North East. We continue to grow carefully, welcoming new team members each week and expanding our services in ways that stay true to our founding values.

Staff are encouraged to find their own adventure - with training, enrichment programmes, and opportunities to progress their careers.

What began as a response to injustice has become a thriving organisation that holds fast to its belief that happy staff enable clients to live their best lives. From a small Newcastle office to a recognised and trusted care provider, Shine Care’s story is still being written - and every new chapter begins with the same promise: person-centred care, compassion, and respect.
