Who We Work With
At Shine Care, we support adults and children with learning difficulties, each with their own personalities, needs, and interests - no two clients are ever the same. Some of the people we work with may have mental health conditions or autism. Others may need support because of complex health conditions or challenging behaviours.
What they all have in common is the right to live with purpose, dignity, and the opportunity to live life as part of their community.
We’re experienced in helping people move from hospitals, residential care, and family homes into a place of their own or into supported living arrangements which they can share with friends. Every service is individually designed around the person, their preferences, and their goals for the future.
Our approach combines person-centred care with the right environment, the right technology, and the right support team. This means we can give each person the tools they need to live as independently as possible and take part in their local community in ways that are meaningful to them.
What It Entails
At Shine Care, support isn’t just about helping with daily routines - it’s about building confidence, independence, and creating opportunities. Every person we support is unique, so the care we provide is always tailored, person-centred, and rooted in respect.
Understanding
Behaviour
Working closely with individuals to recognise what they’re communicating and helping them discover positive new ways to express themselves.
Encouraging
Independence
Promoting safe, positive risk-taking that allows people to explore new experiences, build confidence, and grow at their own pace.
Building Life
Skills
Helping clients learn everyday skills that nurture independence, competence, and resilience - often one small step at a time.
Connecting with
the Community
Encouraging participation in education, work, and social opportunities, helping clients to feel included and thrive within their communities.
Complex care work can be challenging - it requires patience, empathy, and emotional resilience. But it’s also deeply rewarding. Every achievement, no matter how small, represents progress and shared success.

A Client's Journey
When our first client joined Shine Care in 2013, he had spent 27 years in inpatient facilities. He has a severe learning disability, Pica, autism, and is registered blind. For much of his life, he displayed challenging and self-injurious behaviours, resulting in long periods in restrictive, highly supervised environments.
Transitioning from long-term inpatient care to community-supported living was never going to be easy. We believed it was vital to judge his future and quality of life with full respect for his perspective. Structure, predictability, and consistency were key, while building secure, trusting relationships with staff formed the foundation of his wellbeing.
Equally important was creating a safe, non-judgemental environment - free from criticism and risk of harm - where trust, familiarity, and mutual understanding could grow. We wanted him to experience belonging, purpose, and achievement, supported by people who truly believed in his potential.
The Beginning - A New Chapter
Progress didn’t happen overnight — there were difficult days and setbacks along the way — but through patience and consistency, change began to take place.
He began to have more control over his life. His communication through various modes has improved greatly, and we supported him to make active choices over daily activities, diet, and his home décor.
Over time, challenging and self-injurious behaviours have significantly reduced, and his extensive medication regime has been gradually withdrawn. He is currently almost medication-free.

The Journey — Step by Step Progress
More than ten years later, he still lives in the same house with 24/7 support from his Shine Care team, including some of the same staff who first supported him in 2013. His confidence and character continue to grow, and he makes regular decisions over his life that reflect his own preferences and personality.
His journey hasn’t been linear — there have been ups and downs — but his story captures what Shine Care is all about: believing that every person has the right to the support and expertise they need to live comfortably and with purpose, in their own home and community.

The Present — Living with Purpose
We want you to be a part of our future.
At Shine Care, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We carefully select carers for their values, warmth, and commitment to providing kind and nurturing support. Skills and experience matter, but what matters most is a caring personality and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Transitioning from long-term inpatient care to community-supported living was never going to be easy. We felt it was essential, when judging our client's future and quality of life, to do so with the utmost respect for his perspective. Structure, predictability and consistency were viewed as primary components of his lifestyle, whilst the presence and development of secure, trusting relationships with staff would be the cornerstone of his security and wellbeing.
Of equal, if not greater, importance was creating a safe and non-judgemental environment — one free from criticism and risk of harm, where trust, familiarity, and mutual understanding could grow. We wanted him to experience belonging, purpose, and achievement, supported by people who genuinely believed in his potential.
The early years were not easy. Progress was slow, and for a long time, Shine Care had no clients at all. It would have been easy to give up, but Jonathan and Claire held fast to their vision. Nearly two years passed before Shine Care welcomed its very first client — who, more than a decade later, is still with us and thriving in their own home.
